Your council tax is spent in 9 key areas

It’s natural to wonder where your money goes when you pay your tax. When the money is paid it is divided between your local authorities and the emergency services, paying for policing and fire and much more.

Have you thought about who will look after you when you're old? Where will your children go to school? Who picks up your rubbish? Who mends your roads and keeps the county moving? This is all paid for by your Council Tax.

It costs £75,000 to look after each child in care in Essex – think what £10 million would do.

Adult social care is the biggest area of spending for the Council, and this year alone we will spend over £400 million providing care for our older residents. This money will go towards providing vital services to vulnerable adults ranging from respite support, to placing those in need of around the clock assistance into care homes. With the population of our older generation set to increase by 25% over the next decade, this cost will rise significantly.

Protecting our children is one of the Council’s key priorities, and we have a legal duty to ensure children across Essex are safe. Funding in this area helps to keep children centres up and running, provides family support and services for children with disabilities or special needs. Your Council Tax also pays for the recruitment of foster carers. Each child that is taken out of care and put into a foster home reduces the financial burden on taxpayers by tens of thousands of pounds.

As a growing county we are facing an ever-increasing number of school places required across Essex. Through your Council Tax contributions, we can increase our capacity, create more places where they are needed and invest in provision for those with special education needs.

Each year the Council spends millions supporting pupils across Essex, and with more schools rated as ‘good’ or ‘excellent’ than ever before, we think it’s money well spent. We know that investing in the futures of the county’s pupils through education is the key to delivering skills which further support our economy and businesses, and gives our children the very best start in life.
