You have to pay Council Tax if you are…

18+ and OWN or RENT a HOME

Providing that you’re aged 18 and over, if you are currently renting or own a property, you are legally required to pay Council Tax. If you fall into this bracket and believe you are paying the incorrect amount, you should inform your local authority immediately.

You may be exempt if

At this age you’re not considered to be an adult by your local authority and will be eligible for a discount on your Council Tax bill.

If you are participating in a government-backed apprenticeship scheme throughout its duration you or the bill payer may be entitled to a discount on the amount of Council Tax you pay.

If you’re studying full time at this age, you are fully exempt from paying Council Tax.

Full time students don’t need to pay Council Tax for the property they live in and a 100% discount can be given providing all of its occupants also have full-time student status.

Those aged under 25 and receiving funding from either the Skills Funding Agency or Young People’s Learning Agency may be eligible for a Council Tax discount.

Student nurses may be eligible for a discounted rate of Council Tax on their property.

Those with severe mental impairments or those living alongside them could be entitled to a significant discount on their Council Tax bill.

Those staying in the UK to teach their native language can apply for a Council Tax reduction whilst living here.

If you’re a live-in carer, you may not be required to pay the full rate of Council Tax and there may be discounts available to you.

If a property is able to meet certain conditions of disrepair, its Council Tax band becomes void, thus removing the requirement to pay it.

When selling an unoccupied property on behalf of someone who has passed away, the property doesn’t require Council Tax to be paid until six months after you get probate.

Diplomats living in the UK are entitled to a reduced rate of Council Tax while representing their country.

There are also some discounts available if:

You live on your own

If you live on your own, you are entitled to claim the Single Person Discount (SPD), meaning you may receive a 25% discount on your bill each month.

No one is considered as an adult

This category isn’t limited to age, and there are a number of factors that would make someone not be considered as an ‘adult’ for Council Tax purposes. These people can receive up to a 50% reduction in the amount of Council Tax they have to pay.

The property is your second home

The property is empty

You still have to pay Council Tax on a property that’s not occupied. However, some Councils offer a discount. To find out whether you’re Council offers a discount check here.

The property is undergoing major repairs
